Mixed signals, decoded
Hot then cold. Likes your stories but not your texts. Nine confusing moves, what they usually mean, and the one rule that cuts through all of them.

They watch every story you post but take a day to answer a text. They're all over you on Saturday and vague by Tuesday. If you've ever handed your phone to a friend and said "what does this MEAN?", this one's for you.
A caveat first: we can't read anyone's mind, and neither can your group chat. These are the usual meanings, the most likely story. Then there's the rule at the end, which matters more than all nine.
1.They watch your stories but don't reply to texts
Usually means: they're keeping you on the edge of their attention. Watching is free; replying is a commitment. Interested enough to look, not enough to act.
2.Hot on the weekend, cold on weekdays
Usually means: you fit their free time, not their life. Or they're genuinely swamped at work. The test: do they ever make weekday plans with you?
3.Lots of flirting, no actual date
Usually means: they enjoy the attention more than they want the evening. Flirting by text is entertainment. Booking a table is intent.
4.They say "I'm bad at texting"
Usually means: exactly that, sometimes. But people who like you tend to get better at texting fast. Watch whether they're bad at texting everyone, or just you.
5.They pull back right after a great date
Usually means: it felt like a lot, and they got nervous. Give it a few days. If they come back warmer, it was nerves. If they don't, it was an answer.
6.They talk about the future, then never mention it again
Usually means: it was a lovely thought in the moment, not a plan. "We should go to Lisbon" is a mood. "I looked at flights" is a plan.
7.They're affectionate in private, distant in public
Usually means: they're not ready to be seen as a couple, or not sure you are one. Ask. You deserve to know which.
8.They reply instantly, then disappear for days
Usually means: inconsistency is the message. Some people are just chaotic. But if the chaos always lands on you, it's not chaos, it's priority.
9.They come back every few months with "hey stranger"
Usually means: they're bored, lonely or between people. Being someone's comeback when it suits them is not the same as being chosen.
"I'm not playing games. I genuinely don't know how I feel yet, so I go hot and cold without meaning to."
"When she goes quiet I assume she's lost interest and back off. Then she thinks I've lost interest. We're both just guessing."
Plenty of mixed signals aren't strategy at all, just two unsure people mirroring each other. Which brings us to the rule.
The one rule
When someone's signals are mixed, stop decoding and look at what they do over a few weeks. Do they make plans? Keep them? Come towards you? Mixed signals are confusing. Consistent actions never are.
Bottom line
You can't decode a person, but you can watch a pattern. Judge by what they do over time, and when in doubt, ask once, plainly.
