Ghosted? What to do in the first 48 hours

They were there, then they weren't. Why people vanish, what not to do, and the one message worth sending.

The Love Desk · 2 min read

A woman sitting on a windowsill in morning light holding a mug and looking out thoughtfully, her phone face down beside her

Three good dates. A great kiss. "Let's do it again soon." And then: nothing. The message you sent sits there, delivered, unanswered. You check your phone in a way you'd be embarrassed for anyone to see.

Being ghosted stings because it leaves you without an ending. Here's how to write your own.

Why people ghost

Almost never because of something you did. Usually it's one of these: they met someone else, they weren't as into it as they seemed, they got overwhelmed by life, or they simply avoid awkward conversations at all costs. All of those say something about them. None of them say anything about your worth.

Hour 0 to 24: don't chase

  • Don't double, triple or quadruple text. One unanswered message is a question. Four is a plea.
  • Don't stalk their stories looking for clues. You'll find some, and they'll be wrong.
  • Do tell a friend. Out loud, it sounds much smaller than it does in your head.

Hour 24 to 48: send one message, then close the door

If it's been a few days and you want closure, send one calm, dignified message. Not to win them back. To end it on your terms.

The only follow-up you need
"Hey, I've not heard from you so I'm guessing you're not feeling it. No hard feelings, I enjoyed meeting you. Take care."

That's it. If they reply, lovely. If they don't, you've had the last word, and it was gracious.

Her side

"The worst part isn't losing him. It's not knowing. I'd honestly take 'I'm not feeling it' over silence any day."

His side

"I've done it, and I'm not proud. I didn't know how to say I wasn't interested without hurting her, so I said nothing. It was cowardly."

Both sides know silence is worse than a kind no. So if you're ever on the other end: "I've really enjoyed meeting you, but I don't feel a romantic spark. I wish you the best" takes thirty seconds and saves someone a week.

After 48 hours: take your power back

  • Mute or archive the chat so you stop checking it.
  • Do something you enjoy that has nothing to do with dating.
  • Remember what went right. You put yourself out there, you had nice dates, you know what you liked. That's not wasted.

Bottom line

Ghosting is about their courage, not your worth. Send one kind message if you want an ending, then mute the chat and get on with your week.
