Romance tropes, explained
Fake dating, enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience: what each one means, why we can't resist it, and the book from our shelves to start with.

If you've spent five minutes on BookTok, you've heard people order romance like coffee: "grumpy-sunshine, forced proximity, one bed." Tropes are the familiar shapes love stories take, and far from being lazy, they're the point. Knowing your favourite trope is the fastest way to find your next favourite book.
Here are the big ones, why they work, and one book from our own shelves to start each. Spice is out of five.
Fake dating
Two people pretend to be a couple for a good reason (a wedding, a jealous ex, a bet) and slowly stop pretending. We love it because every "fake" touch is secretly real, and both of them know it before they'll admit it.

The Deal
Elle Kennedy · Off-Campus #1 · Fake dating · sports romance
Hannah needs a date to make her crush notice; the hockey captain she's tutoring needs to pass. The deal is fake. The chemistry isn't.
SPICE ●●●●○ 4/5Start hereEnemies to lovers
They can't stand each other, and the friction turns into heat. The appeal: when someone has seen you at your worst and argued with you at full volume, falling for them feels earned.

Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen · Enemies to lovers · classic
The original and still the best. A rude first ball, a terrible proposal, and a man who actually changes when he's told the truth.

Fourth Wing
Rebecca Yarros · The Empyrean #1 · Enemies to lovers · romantasy
Enemies to lovers with dragons, a war college and a hero who has every reason to want her dead. The fantasy version, and much spicier.
SPICE ●●●○○ 3/5Then tryMarriage of convenience
They marry for money, inheritance, visas or reputation, and then fall in love inside the marriage. It flips the usual order: commitment first, romance after.

Inconvenient Wife
Natasha Boyd · Charleston #2 · Marriage of convenience · friends to lovers
He needs a wife to inherit; she's his best friend and agrees to help. Friends to lovers inside a marriage of convenience.
SPICE ●●○○○ 2/5Start hereLove triangle
Two people, one heart, and a choice. Done well, it's agonising in the best way. Done honestly, it's about what we owe our friends.

Something Borrowed
Emily Giffin · Darcy & Rachel #1 · Love triangle
She falls for her best friend's fiancé. Messy, uncomfortable and impossible to put down.
SPICE ●○○○○ 1/5Start hereMistaken identity
Someone isn't who they say they are, and the lie gets harder to confess the more they fall. Delicious tension, guaranteed reveal scene.

The Boy Next Door
Meg Cabot · Boy #1 · Mistaken identity · told in emails
Told entirely in emails: the "nephew" who turns up to walk the neighbour's dog isn't the nephew at all.
SPICE ●○○○○ 1/5Start hereOpposites attract
The planner and the chaos, the scientist and the free spirit. We love it because each one makes the other bigger.

The Rosie Project
Graeme Simsion · Don Tillman #1 · Opposites attract · romcom
A genetics professor with a questionnaire for the perfect wife, and the woman who fails every question.
SPICE ○○○○○ noneStart hereThe reformed rake
A notorious charmer meets the one person who won't put up with him, and changes. Pure fantasy, and historical romance's favourite flavour.

Devil's Cub
Georgette Heyer · Alastair-Audley #2 · Reformed rake · Georgian
A Georgian marquis tries to carry off the wrong sister, and she shoots him. Glorious.
SPICE ○○○○○ noneStart hereThe antihero
He's not a good man, but he's good to her. Dark romance lives here. Fantasy rule applies: love him on the page. (We explain in book boyfriends we'd never date.)

Cruel Marriage
K.A. Linde · Antihero · married to the enemy
A powerful couple who love each other and wage war anyway. Best read with the earlier books in the series.
SPICE ●●●●○ 4/5Start here"Fake dating, every time. I love watching them realise it's real before they'll say it."
"I'll admit it: enemies to lovers. The arguing is the flirting, and I'm here for it."
Bottom line
Tropes aren't clichés; they're a menu. Find yours, then go deeper. And if someone asks your favourite, you now have an answer.
