The compliments that actually land

"You look nice" is fine. These are the ones people replay in their heads for a week, and the ones that quietly miss.

Everyone likes a compliment. But some disappear the second they're said, and some get replayed on the bus home, screenshotted, sent to a best friend. The difference is rarely the words. It's how specific they are.

The rule: notice something they chose

Looks are lovely to compliment, but people didn't choose their eyes. They did choose the jacket, the joke, the restaurant, the way they handled the rude waiter. Compliment a choice and you're telling them you noticed them, not just their face.

  • Fine: "You look nice." Lands: "That colour is really good on you."
  • Fine: "You're funny." Lands: "I've been thinking about your story about the wedding all day."
  • Fine: "Nice place." Lands: "You picked this? You've got great taste."
Her side

"Tell me something you noticed that nobody else would. That I'm a good listener, or that I made you laugh. I'll remember it for months."

His side

"Honestly? Almost anything. A lot of us rarely get compliments, so a simple 'you've got great hands' or 'you're a good kisser' can make our week."

That second answer surprises a lot of women. If he rarely hears anything personal, the bar is low and the effect is big. Tell him he smells good, that his forearms are a problem, that you liked how he talked about his brother.

Five that tend to land, either way round

1."You're really easy to talk to."

It says: I feel comfortable with you. Few compliments are warmer.

2."I like who you are around your friends."

Perfect after meeting their people. It tells them their world fits.

3."You make me laugh more than anyone."

Humour is one of the things people are proudest of. Say it when they're not trying to be funny.

4."I trust your taste."

For the person who picked the bar, the book, the playlist. Small, specific, flattering.

5."I thought about you today."

Not technically a compliment. Works better than most.

The ones that quietly miss

  • Compliments with a "for": "You're pretty for a…" Whatever comes next, don't.
  • Comparisons: "You're so much nicer than my ex." Now they're thinking about your ex.
  • The body, too soon: on a first date, keep it to what you'd say in front of their mum. Save the rest for when you're both enjoying it.

And how to take one

Say "thank you." That's it. Don't argue ("ugh, my hair's a mess"), don't bounce it straight back ("no, you look nice"). A smile and a thank-you tells the other person they got it right, which makes them want to do it again.

Bottom line

Be specific, compliment what they chose, and when it's your turn, just say thank you.
